Discover the Outback : XOXO Package Find out More

Even with Mt Mulligan Lodge a pinprick in the distance, it’s clear during the helicopter arrival there’s a vast outback playground at your fingertips. Located in the shadow of Ngarrabullgan (Mount Mulligan), the lodge, infinity pool, pavilion rooms and suites and glamping tents take up a tiny footprint on a 28,000-hectare heritage station. This, and the entire great outdoors are all yours to enjoy.

If you’re happiest outside, here’s three Mt Mulligan Lodge experiences perfect for your adventure couple bucket list.

Why Mt Mulligan Lodge is the perfect place for the active couple

Outback arrivals

Start the adventure with a rockstar arrival that offers the best birds eye view of what you’ll be exploring over the next few days. Helicopters depart out of Cairns airport, 160km away, and take you inland on a zippy 35-minute flight from the coast. If you’ve got the time and a hankering to hop into a 4WD, self-drive into the lodge. The three-hour journey takes you over the Kuranda Ranges, through the townships of Mareeba, Dimbulah and into the outback.

Self-guided walks

At breakfast, after you’re well-fueled with the likes of smashed avocado toast, or berry pancakes, plus fresh juice, and a coffee or two, spend some time perusing the self-guided walk maps. There’s seven different trails, ranging from a one hour long, 3km loop via the outdoor Sunset Bar to a more extensive 3.5 hour, 11.5km trail through the old Mount Mulligan township. You’ll pass by the town cemetery and Mt Mulligan memorial, laid to honour the miners who lost their lives in the 1921 coal mine explosion and the old hospital, now staff quarters. Swing by the Sunset Bar on your way back to the lodge and if you time that well with lodge sundowners, you’ll have earned your drinks tonight.

Signature and bespoke activities

Mornings start as early as you like at Mt Mulligan Lodge. Rise before the sun and watch it crest Ngarrabullgan from a kayak as you paddle through the water lilies on the home billabong. Strike out birdwatching with a pair of binoculars from your room as the birds have a vocal start to the day. Or ease into the day’s activities after breakfast. Each day there is one guided signature activity you’ll undertake as a small group – it might be an ATV tour through town to the abandoned coal mine, a station tour or a trip out to the Tyrconnell gold mine. You’ll get a good taste of the mining history and learn about the land and local Kuku Djungan people. Layer on a bespoke activity for a deeper connection to this special place. A tube float in the Ah Bowers waterhole, with sunset drinks on its sandy shores, a private dinner under the stars or a vigorous but well-rewarded Ngarrabullgan Gorge sunset walk are a few options.
