Through the Seasons

We are often asked what makes each season from summer through to winter special at Mt Mulligan Lodge. Every season reveals a different story of the landscape’s rugged beauty and rich past and invites you to slow down and connect with nature.

December to February
SUMMER

While the rainfall in the outback at this time of year is much lower than Cairns and coastal regions, the first signs of the wet season approach in December with spectacular displays of monsoon rainclouds bursting from the sky and the land becomes rich and green within days. The scent of eucalyptus and wild river mint fills the air while migratory birds arrive and wildlife flourishes.
Our seasonal closure is from late January to early March each year for routine property maintenance.

March – May
AUTUMN

Autumn brings comfortable temperatures day and night with clear skies offering ideal conditions for stargazing. The pure clarity and scale of the night skies from the northern outback is breathtaking. At Mt Mulligan Lodge in “big sky” country, the colours of dawn and dusk bookend nature’s daily theatre.

June – August
WINTER

Winter days are warm and dry with low humidity, with day temperatures hovering between 22-30 degrees celsius. Clear skies make for perfect picnic weather, so pack your chef-prepared gourmet hamper in the back of your all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and find an idyllic spot to soak up the views. As the sun sets, brilliant reds, purples and pinks flood the sky.

September – November
SPRING

Spring at Mt Mulligan Lodge delivers perfect outback weather, warm, dry days and crisp, clear nights. Wildflowers dot the landscape, wildlife stirs, and the air carries the subtle scent of blooming wattles. It’s the ideal season to explore the region’s rich gold and coal rush heritage or simply relax into the stillness of the surrounds. As evening falls, take in the spectacle of Mount Mulligan glowing a deep, fiery red under the setting sun; the perfect backdrop for sunset drinks.
